Library Website
Library Media Specialist: Mrs.Popovic
Welcome to the William Penn Elementary Library Website! On this website you will get to see all the exciting things that we are doing in the library. Students have library class two times a week. One day consisting of a lesson and the second day is a book exchange day. Many of the skills taught at our library are focused around standards for the 21st-century learner. In recognition of these demands, we structure our curriculum to promote a love for reading, recognize different literary genres, problem-solve, use critical thinking skills, and engage with different technologies. With technology comes incredible opportunities for students to learn, connect, create, and collaborate. Students at our library recognize the importance of using valid information for research projects. Collaborative projects are done with the classroom teacher and students are utilizing information literacy skills and gathering research with different online databases, encyclopedias, and reputable websites. Additionally, we acknowledge that students are now online more and they need to know the importance of being a good digital citizen. At our library we teach the kids how to navigate cyberbullying, be aware of privacy online, and other digital dilemmas that they need to know using Common Sense Media.

Distance Learning at William Penn Library
Hello William Penn Friends!
I hope you are all safe and healthy. I miss you all at William Penn Elementary. You bring me more joy and happiness than any of you can imagine, and I hope we are together again soon. During this time, I will be updating this website as much as possible to bring you different online resources and activities that you can use to help ease your mind at home.
I know that your classroom teachers have been in touch with you and assigning materials for you to complete at home. For the month of April, we are doing a STEM challenge online in the library.
Have fun and I look forward to seeing your great projects!!

Makerspace with LittleBits
William Penn students have been inspired to create solutions to real-world problems using LittleBits and other STEAM/STEM learning activities. The unit is lead by the librarian, Mrs.Popovic. The unit started with the reading of the story "What do you do with an Idea?" by Kobi Yamada. The story teaches the kids that everything begins with an idea, and that a single idea can grow into something bigger.
The class used LittleBits to grow and develop their ideas. LittleBits are electronic, color-coded bits that snap together to form different circuits. These circuits can be developed further to create different systems, such as flashlights, robotic cars, buzzers, or doorbells. This invention-based learning method empowers the kids to explore through inventive activity. The kids use different cards to guide them through the process, but ultimately they have the freedom to design their own prototype, collaborate, and problem-solve together. They realize that they have the power to become scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers. Maybe the next big thing will come out of William Penn Library!
